The Prototype i MiEV will be used to gauge public reaction towards electric cars ahead of a possible 2010 market launch
Late last month Mitsubishi released several teaser sketches for a new all-electric sports car concept it is planning for next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Today, the carmaker has released a new sketch for a second all-electric concept vehicle it also plans to unveil at the Geneva event, the new Prototype i MiEV.
The Prototype i MiEV concept vehicle is based around the current i MiEV all-electric hatch that is already feasibility testing in Europe. The unveiling of the new concept is designed to showcase the technology to the public in the lead up to the car’s eventual sales launch.
While no final decision has been made on a European launch date for a production version, Mitsubishi will continue to gauge reactions with even more concepts like the Prototype i MiEV.
The standard i MiEV will be Mitsubishi’s first mass produced all-electric car and is currently scheduled for a 2010 launch in Japan. It will feature a 63hp (46kW) electric motor powered by 330-volt lithium ion batteries. This will provide it with a driving range of roughly 100 miles and should take about seven hours to charge from a household power outlet. In an attempt to curtail long charge times, a 'quick-charge' pack is also being developed by power companies, which will see the i MiEV’s battery being charged to 80% of its capacity in just 35 minutes.
Mitsubishi eventually hopes to sell up to 2,000 i MiEVs in the first year and plans to expand this to around 10,000 units by 2011.
